This beautiful double-sided devotional piece features the inscription ‘Milagre de Nª Sª da Nazareth’ (‘Miracle of Our Lady of Nazareth’) in black lettering against white enamel on one side, while the reverse depicts the dramatic medieval legend itself. According to the story, in 1182 the knight Dom Fuas Roupinho was pursuing a deer on horseback through thick fog when the animal plunged over a cliff; realising his own horse was about to follow, he called upon Our Lady of Nazaré (the Virgin Mary), when his horse miraculously stopped at the cliff edge.
